Dream Realm Gallery
I enjoy the feeling of kinetically charging images by repeating them throughout a compostion, and then emmeshing them in a textural terrain that suits them. Rhythms and vibrations made visible -- as though every element must be participating in some grand dance. Much of my work is inspired by music and dance, especially jazz, which I interpret and conduct by way of the spontaneously drawn line. I like that phrase "free hand." But of course it's not really free to do whatever it wants. There's a delightful tension in letting it move freely and restraining it at the same time. It's one hand dancing on paper.
With the exception of temporarily captured insects, for which I also consult photographs, I don't draw from live (or dead) models. My human figures, and most other creatures, are derived from memory and imagination. And although not so anatomically correct, I feel I touch the spirit of what's human, or the essence of any living thing, by this, for me, more direct path -- from heart to hand to surface. Sounds like sumi-e to me, especially if I remember to breathe into each stroke, dash, or dot.
